presently the state of art for the classification of high spatial
resolution imagery, specially in urban areas. Nevertheless, the
cost of licenses of commercial software packages for these tasks
is very high. InterIMAGE is an open source knowledge-based
classification system whose image analysis concept is highly
flexible, offering great potential. It allows the use of data from
different sources and resolutions and of image processing
operators customized by the user. The objective of this work is to
create an urban land use/land cover classification model, using
the InterIMAGE classification system, TerraAIDA image processing
operators and images from the high resolution sensor QuickBird.
The area under study for this work is a section of the
municipality of S{\~a}o Paulo (S{\~a}o Paulo State, Brazil),
where Parais{\'o}polis, the second largest squatter settlement of
the city is located. The peculiarity of this squatter settlement
lies on the high socialeconomic standard of its surroundings and
the fact that it has been reurbanized. The land cover
classification was made using a genetic algorithm to calibrate the
segmentation parameters and feature selection algorithms, as well
as the C4.5 decision tree algorithm, for the description of
classes. The land use classification was done based on features
related to the composition and structure of land cover objects
located within the blocks. The model was simulated and evaluated
in three test sites in a larger regional context, using the
Definiens Developer classification system, and afterwards reset to
fit the analysis concept of InterIMAGE and applied on four test
areas. The potential and flexibilities of the InterIMAGE system
were explored by more than one setting of the land cover
classification model. Operators and attributes were suggested,
which were implemented and applied in the frame of both projects
InterIMAGE and TerraAIDA. The land cover and land use
classifications reached mean Kappa accuracy indices of 0.66 and
0.75 respectively. The objectives of this study which concern the
refinement of the system and the elaboration of an application
within an urban area with the InterIMAGE system were fully
achieved.",
